Benefits of Collagen

collagen2Collagen is a naturally occurring protein found in our bodies, and contributes to maintaining healthy, vibrant skin. It has many benefits, including revitalizing skin elasticity, boosting your metabolism and aiding digestion, as well as helping with bone and hair strength. In this post I am sharing a recipe for a skin-boosting antioxidant smoothie bowl, as well as the results of trying Vital Proteins collagen over the past few weeks.

To see if using a collagen enhanced routine had any visible skincare changes, I took the recommended amount of the collagen peptides every day in the morning. The Vanilla and Coconut Water flavour in the yellow tin was great mixed in juices, coffee, and matcha tea drinks. You can also bake with it. The unflavoured version in the blue box came in individual packets which made it great for bringing on the go.
IMG_1931IMG_1929A few days immediately after taking the collagen peptides, my skin did start to feel smoother, although visible results took at least two weeks to show. The delicate skin under my eyes have plumped up and the overall skin texture feels velvety soft now. According to the Vital Proteins website, “The intake of collagen ensures the cohesion, elasticity and regeneration of skin, hair, tendon, cartilage, bones and joints. Collagen is vital for strengthening blood vessels and giving skin its elasticity and strength.” On a side note, my knee joints used to always make a cracking sound when bending, and now they are completely silent after adding this to my routine!

IMG_2086Here is the recipe for a smoothie bowl that I would typically have in the mornings:

Ingredients:

  • 1 orange
  • 1/2 banana
  • Scoop of collagen powder
  • 1/4 cup pitted cherries
  • 1/4 cup blueberries
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • Optional: banana slices and blueberries to garnish

Directions: Mix all ingredients in a blender with ice until desired texture is achieved. Smoothie bowls usually have a thicker consistency, and a thinner one for drinking from a glass.
